Twenty years ago this year, Aviareto launched the International Registry of Mobile Assets, establishing a secure, global system for recording international interests in airframes, aircraft engines and helicopters.
Managed by Aviareto since 2006, the International Registry plays an important role in providing certainty and confidence across the global aviation finance community. It allows individuals and organisations to register financial interests in aircraft objects, helping to establish priority between competing interests under the legal framework of the Cape Town Convention and Aircraft Protocol.
Aviareto, a joint venture between SITA and the Irish Government, was selected to establish and manage the International Registry following a global tendering process run by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Based in Ireland, Aviareto has delivered this service for two decades, providing users across the world with a secure, reliable and customer-focused platform.
The International Registry is used by lessors, airlines, banks, corporations, legal firms and private individuals. Its purpose is clear: to provide a trusted electronic record of interests in aircraft objects and to help determine priority when those interests need to be recognised.
For Aviareto, the role of Registrar carries a significant responsibility. The Registry depends on the integrity, availability and security of its records. As Rob Cowan, Managing Director of Aviareto, said: “The definition of Registrar is keeper of the record and our records are electronic, stored on the internet. Securing these records is our number one priority.”
